Build Linux File Server

Stability and resistance to the virus has become a brand itself for Linux. That’s why a lot of which then makes Linux as a server computer for various purposes such as a webserver, routers, and etc. With so many tools developed by developers, build linux file server more rapidly and easy to use. The make Linux as a local file server i ever made are with use Linux Ubuntu Desktop 10:04 (Lucid Lynx) and Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). When installation process of Ubuntu Linux to build linux file server is complete, just use the following tools to simplify and easiest administration and management file server. build linux file server

1. Samba

In order for the folder and file sharing on the computer which is used as a file server can be accessed from another computer that not use Linux, such as windows, then we should install SMBFS as a bridge sharing. To install it can be done with following the command:

sudo apt-get install smbfs

2. SSH

SSH will allow us to access server computer from another computer with use an application such as PuTTY. To install it can be done with a command :

sudo apt-get install ssh


To be more easy perform backup and restore as well as upload and download files on the hard drive with a server computer using FTP transfer (ex. Filezilla) we need to install vsftpd.

To install VSFTPD can be done with the command:

sudo apt-get install vsftpd

4. Webmin

This is my favorite web-based tool, because with webmin we will be able to perform full control of the computer server from any computer using a web browser.

To install Webmin can following this step :

apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl apt-show-versions python wget dpkg -i webmin_1.730_all.deb Then we can access webmin with http://ipaddress:10000 from web browser
